Trams Trains and Buses. Giving up Metcard and loving Myki

Postby mxwoz » Mon Jul 26, 2010 9:32 pm

Today was my first business day using Myki
Got on my Tram Myki worked, rode to St Kilda woops too far, my fault had got to the gripping part in a book and hadn't noticed passing the CBD (I blame ... me really)
Back to the CBD Myki worked 2 seconds
Tram to Docklands Myki again faultless
On the homeward leg
Myki 2 seconds
And then I was home.

Overall I have been using Myki on trams for the last 2 months and mostly it works and works well. Occasionally there are readers not working or a reader takes a little while to register.

For regular travelers using Myki as a weekly or monthly pass it is a fantastic system. Now that you don't have to touch off, one of the major design defects of the system has been removed.

Initially I had been skeptical, but now I am completely won over, I still have gripes, I am after all human, but overall its a fantastic system.

one happy user, a few hundred thousand to go.

The key trouble with myki - apart from the ridiculous cost etc etc - is that it can work fine for one person one day, and be stuffed for another. For example, I tried it the other day at a suburban rail station - it took me about a minute of continually touching my card off and on the scanner to get it to read. Luckily the train wasn't due for 5 minutes...

And when it did finally read, it flashed my card balance up on the screen for a fraction of a second, ie too fast to read....

FYI, I believe it will stay up as long as you hold the card to the reader
