Would the Liberals really scrap Myki?

Postby Peter Mount » Thu Jul 29, 2010 6:03 pm

Despite my defence of Myki lately I do agree it's introduction was a mess. Not so many months ago I was bad mouthing it myself.

If the Liberal Party were to win the next Victorian State Election do people think they would really scrap Myki? I personally think their talk of looking at the contract is just to win votes and that they would not really scrap Myki. But then again I'm no expert on politics.

What do other people think?

Not a chance. As soon as they discovered (accepted? Admitted?) the state that Metcard is in they would realise they have no option but to make Myki work, one way or another. We just don't have enough time to start from scratch!

See viewtopic.php?f=3&t=320&p=3606#p3606 - the only sensible thing to do is completely review the options and then make a decision. Throwing more good money after bad isn't the automatic right choice, though MAY be necessary when the real truth is know.

Metcard falling apart is a myth.

All parts are available to maintain Metcard for years to come. Any new EFTPOS system can be put into the old machines with no trouble. The Barriers can last another ten years easily.

Relaibility is the best its been for several years and improving - just check the TTA performance data.

In short, its fine and will be for years.

And where do you get this information from.

Firstly, on what grounds are people claiming that the system is not maintainable? What bits are falling apart or not available? Basically its just dodgy publicity trying to justify MYKI.

Secondly, ask any engineer who has worked on the system - they seem to have no trouble getting new parts to replace the faulty ones and the government seems to be able to buy heaps of new Metcard equipment on all the new buses that keep getting introduced onto the system (new orbital routes).

Lastly, perhaps a look at DOI's Track Record will show the reliability of the Metcard system. Google will find it for you :-)

I'm not denying that Metcard has been reliable all these years. I still carry a Metcard in my wallet despite using a Myki card.

It seems like the discussion is going backwards and forwards in regard to availability of spare parts. My honest feeling is that a system can't run indefinitely. Can anybody provide a link to a resource that outlines what is going on with the issue of spare parts?

I talk to the ERG technicians (or whoever 'own' them now) at work, and they assure me that the system is on its last legs. I don't know the specifics, as my job doesn't involve ticketing.

Last legs? I would suggest that the only relevant "legs" are the ones those tricky technicians are pulling. Check Track Record again - not to mention various claims four or five years ago that the system was on its last legs.

Darned long legs . . .
